Backend Scripting Design

The Pacer Online Edition is a PHP, data-driven web site built with both the reader and editor in mind. For the reader, the articles and media that they are looking for are only a click away. For the editor, a user friendly interface to help them do what they do best - deliver the news and information that UTM needs.

A great deal goes on behind the scenes to bring the Online Edition to you each week. However, none of it has to do with complex programming thanks to a comprehensive content management system, just called "Content Manager" for the sake of simplicity.

Editors can spend more time working on that Pulitzer Prize winning report on the physics of shopping carts or the intricacies of Saturday Night Live skits rather than learning HTML.

Both the front and management side of the web site were built using Macromedia Dreamweaver MX, with the PHAkt 2.1.2 PHP server model. The backend database and content pages are housed on a Solaris UNIX system, running MySQL.

Why develop in house? Because we felt that our site could be unique enough to demand a hands on approach non-existant in the private sector. In addition, we saved a bundle.

If you would like a copy of this application suite, just drop us an e-mail. We have not packaged the entire site at the moment, but since it is subject to constant change, it is not practical anyway. Make sure you read and understand the GPL license before requesting the source file.
  Sincerely,

Stephen Yeargin
